Digital Storytelling

Assignment Title: Digital Short Story
Uses in the Classroom:  As part of a mentoring program, fourth grade students will create a digital story using Animoto or (a similar program) that they will share with first grade students. The older students will select photos from home or choose from pictures the teacher has provided or preselected to use in their story. Next they will invent a short story based on their pictures and then design, construct and produce a photo essay to go along with the story. The stories will be viewed by the younger students who will then be asked which stories they liked and why.  This will allow the younger students to identify, retrieve and describe the stories they have viewed. Interpreting, summarizing and comparing are additional skills the younger students may utilize in this exercise.

Issues to Consider: The use of Animoto requires a subscription which may be purchased by the school or teacher.  Other similar programs may be available at no cost. The students creating the stories would need to be competent in basic computer skills.
